PINE MANOR COLLEGE NAMES ELLEN S. HURWITZ INTERIM PRESIDENT

Boston, Mass. – Pine Manor College (PMC) in Chestnut Hill, MA, one of the most diverse liberal arts women’s colleges in the nation, has named Ellen S. Hurwitz, Ph.D. as the College’s Interim President. Hurwitz assumed her duties on November 5th, 2012.

“Ellen Hurwitz’ extensive background in higher education makes her a perfect fit for Pine Manor,” said Serena Greening, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “She served as a college president for 17 years at three different institutions, so she has the right skill set and knows what it takes to lead a school successfully. We are confident that her leadership abilities, enthusiasm, and understanding of our mission will serve the College and its students well.”

Hurwitz comes well-equipped to lead Pine Manor, with 40 years of higher education experience. In addition to teaching history and interdisciplinary studies at Wesleyan University and Lafayette College, she chaired Lafayette’s History Department, served as Associate Dean of Faculty and more recently as a member of its Board of Trustees. She also served as Provost and Dean of Faculty at Illinois Wesleyan University and as President of Albright College, New England College and, most recently, at American University of Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. Hurwitz was also chair of the Columbia University Seminar on Slavic History and Culture and a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Ukrainian Research Center. Following her return from Central Asia shehas been a member of the Registry for College and University Interim Presidents and served as Senior Consultant with Stevens Strategy, which provides educational consultancy and strategic planning management to colleges, universities and schools from around the world.

Hurwitz received her B.A. from Smith College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. She also studied at Moscow State University and at the Institute for Educational Management and New Presidents Program at Harvard University.
