STANDISH, Maine -- Saint Joseph's College of Maine took both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader over Pine Manor College on Monday afternoon in Standish, ME. The Monks defeated Pine Manor 9-1 in 5 innings in game one before defeating the Gators 11-1 in 5 innings in game two.
Pine Manor opened the scoring in game one, as Kaylyn Delgado (Worcester, Mass.) plated Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, R.I.) with a double to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. From that point forward Saint Joseph's (ME) scored a combined 20 unanswered runs in game one and two.
Saint Joe's took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning, scoring when Connie Grovo (Limington, Maine) singled and Emily Leverone (Hampton, N.H.) walked before both runners scored when Heather Tripp (Lovell, Maine) reached on an error by Pine Manor right fielder Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, Ill.).
Saint Joseph’s added two more runs in the bottom of the third before putting the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs off three hits and three Pine Manor errors to take a 9-1 lead before winning in five innings due to the run-rule.
In game two, the Monks continued to score runs and take advantage of Pine Manor's mistakes. Saint Joe's socred three runs on four hits in the first inning before adding two runs on two PMC errors in the third inning.
Already leading 5-0, Saint Joe's added six runs on two hits and four Pine Manor errors in the fourth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate to help them take an 11-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Pine Manor collected its second hit of the contest when Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA) singled to left field. Deegan would come around to score and break the shut out on a error by Saint Joe's, but the Gaotrs would get no closer, dropping game two 11-1 in five innings.
Pine Manor will now travel to Norwich University on Wednesday afternoon for a GNAC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
