CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- Trailing two sets to none in the final match of the day, Pine Manor volleyball rallied to secure a 25-22 third set victory over Wentworth before taking the final two sets in a comeback 3-2 victory to help give Pine Manor Athletics a perfect 3-0 record on Saturday, September 17, 2011.
The second win of the day for volleyball came just an hour after sophomore Amanda Powell (Lumberton, NJ) and senior Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA) each scored two goals to lead Pine Manor to a 4-1 victory over Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Hedley Field.
The day began with volleyball defeating Lesley University 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-16) behind 11 kills from senior Jen Gross (Coral Springs, FL) and 8 kills from freshmen Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL).
Just under an hour later, soccer kicked-off its match with Anna Maria, taking roughly 30 minutes before Powell would give Pine Manor another lead at 1-0. A resilient Anna Maria team fought back to tie the score 1-1 at the half, but Powell and Deegan would answer in the second half, scoring three goals to give PMC a 4-1 victory.
As Deegan scored in the final minutes of the match and sophomore goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) denied the final shots of the game, volleyball was underway again at Pine Manor Gymnasium. However, volleyball got out to a slow start in its second match against, dropping the first set just as PMC soccer was celebrating its first victory of the season.
Following a second set loss, the Gator volleyball team would regain their form, as Mann and junior Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) each put down four kills and Gross put down three to help rally the Gators to a set victory. Gross finished the second match with 9 kills, helping her to move just 12 kills shy of 500 in her career.
Volleyball will be in action again on Tuesday night, September 20, when they travel to take on Becker College, while Soccer will host GNAC rival Norwich University on Wednesday, September 21, at Hedley Field.
