The Biology Department at Pine Manor College submitted a grant proposal to the NIH under the BUILD initiative. We are awaiting review of our proposal and hope to launch this site in the near future.
Pine Manor's partnership with East Boston High School will increase the number of high school students choosing the biology program at Pine Manor to take advantage of the BUILD pathway. Our BUILD programs will increase the awareness and interest of these high school students to careers in biomedical research with initiatives that will engage and empower them to envision themselves as future researchers and enter the BUILD pathway.
The Science Department at EBHS has built a strong program. We and the faculty at EBHS have planned a number of initiatives that will mesh with their curriculum. Our initiatives will be sustained beyond the BUILD grant period because we will have created perpetuating program changes. Broader conversations have included an extension of our program to the middle school students.
EBHS has a strong learning community in the classroom, nurtured by the teachers. In particular, the Science Department at EBHS has built a strong program. They offer nine courses including two honors courses, three AP courses and an Advanced Topics Biology class each year. For academic year 2015 they will offer Biology, Honors Biology, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Advanced Topics, Biotechnology, AP Biology, AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Science.
Our partnership will provide high school students with in-class exposure to research scientists, college professors and hands-on lab inquiry, multiple exposures to research career information, traditional and near-peer mentoring, recruitment based information sessions about the biology program at Pine Manor and recruitment into the BUILD STEP-One summer program.
We invite the EBHS community to use the blog to share their experiences and feedback about our BUILD program.
