Pitching, defense on display in Gators openers
2010 Gators Season Preview
CLERMONT, FL -- The Gators kicked off 2010 with a pair of losses at the Dot Richardson National Training Center in Clermont, FL, falling to Haverford 5-0 and Hannibal-Legrange 3-1 in head coach Kristi Lyman's Pine Manor debut.
"Our defense was very solid across the board," said Lyman.
In the morning match-up, Fords senior pitcher Cassandra Searls no-hit the Gators in Haverford's 5-0 victory. In her first start in two years, Pine Manor pitcher Siobhan Raymond pitched well to spite picking up the loss, striking out five, walking only one and allowing five hits.
A late Gators rally fell short this afternoon. Jess Kennedy led off the seventh inning with a triple and scored on a Michelle Myers sacrifice fly, but it was all the offense the Gators could muster.
Raymond, Courtney Wallace and Flavia Vicente collected one hit a piece in suppore of Tia Nelson, who pitched well in her college debut. Nelson fanned four and let up six hits, going 1-3 at the plate.
"We were very solid defensively," said Lyman. "Our offense is going to come around."
The Gators take on Penn State-Behrend Monday afternoon at 1:30 and Northland at 5:30 p.m.
