CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- Amanda Powell's first career goal was not enough to lift Pine Manor in a 2-1 loss to Newbury, marking the first time the Gators have lost to their Brookline rivals.
The Nighthawks (1-1) got on the board early, as Briana Tomaselli scored her first of two goals on a feed from Jessica Graus at 2:43. Tomaselli struck again with just under 7:00 remaining in the half, cashing in from point blank range on a cross from Krista Toney to make it a 2-0 game at the half.
Newbury outshot the Gators (0-3) 18-3 in the half, taking seven corner kicks to Pine Manor's one. Colleen Tencza made six saves in the period before being replaced by freshman Natasha Kopystynsky at halftime.
In her first college action, Kopystynsky kept the Gators within striking distance. Pine Manor got to within one on Powell's (right) goal, which came on a Beth Deegan cross at 69:30, but the Gators couldn't muster the equalizer. Kopystynsky made five saves in a perfect second half as the Gators outshot Newbury 9-8 in the frame.
For Newbury, Kimberly Bibby made seven saves in the win.
After a three-game road trip, Pine Manor opens a two-game homestand on Wednesday against St. Joseph's (ME) at 4:00 p.m.
