CHESTNUT HILL, MA – St. Joseph’s (ME) improved to 4-0-0 on 2010 in spoiling Pine Manor’s Great Northeast Athletic Conference home opener with a 4-0 win over the Gators Wednesday afternoon at Hedley Field.
With the help of reigning GNAC Player of the Week Jessica Needham (East Bridgewater, MA/Cardinal Spellman) the Monks got going early, providing all the offense they would need in the opening minutes. Ashley Beaulieu (Durham, ME/Lisbon) hammered home a Needham miss at the 10:17 mark. Needham followed her own shot up almost five minutes later, tapping her own miss at the post at 15:07.
The Monks (2-0-0 GNAC) added another score before halftime, as freshman Cassie Diplock (Augusts, ME/Cony) scored from 20 yards on a give and go from Jessica Capozzi (Saugus, MA/Saugus) at 32:41. St. Joseph’s outshot the Gators 19-2 in the half, 17-2 in shots on goal.
Needham added her second goal, this from 20 yards straight on over an outstretched Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnstown, IL/Johnstown), at 69:23 on an assist from Mikayla Call (Portland, ME/McAuley).
GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week Jacqueline Lorenzen (Windham, ME/Windham) extended her undefeated streak to four games to open her career, making five saves in the shutout for the Monks.
For Pine Manor, Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) tallied three of her team’s six shots in the loss. Colleen Tencza (South Meriden, CT/Platt) made 11 saves in the first half before being replaces by Kopystynsky at halftime.
The Gators (0-4-0, 0-2-0 GNAC) continue their homestand in non-conference play, hosing Wells College on Saturday at noon.
