Inclusiveness

At Pine Manor College, we have always believed that learning and leadership are connected. We embrace a new kind of learning and leadership that resides in the process of people in relationship with one another – collaborating, interacting, and engaging each other. It is an idea many businesses, corporations, and organizations throughout the world are exploring, and it is being crafted at a handful of innovative institutions of higher education, like PMC.

“PMC encouraged me and gave me the confidence I needed in myself while pushing me to become a better person. The staff and professors were great. They taught me so much about myself and about life itself.”

– Margaret Sweeney, ’96,
Attorney in Massachusetts

“Attending PMC brought out the best of my abilities and encouraged me to be a leader.”

– Kirsten Blocker, ’00,
Administrative Assistant for Housing for a homeless shelter program in Boston

The values of inclusive leadership and social responsibility (ILSR) are rooted in a philosophy of respect, trust, individual worth, equality, openness, and democratic process. Learning is increased when people work collaboratively – when the teacher becomes a learner and when learners take responsibility for their learning.

The faculty at Pine Manor College understand that how one teaches is a powerful influence on whether students learn and what they learn. They are continually revising courses, experimenting with collaborative techniques, and creating interdisciplinary approaches and innovative strategies to promote active participation by our students.

Our students learn about inclusive leadership by working in teams, thinking across disciplinary boundaries, and being active participants in the successful outcomes of their education.

At PMC, leadership is within reach for all students. Through our innovative and integrated program, students develop leadership skills from the very beginning of their college career.

First-year students are guided through the transition to a new community through regular programs, including a weekend retreat. These programs explore the topics of community, diversity and the common good, communication, goal setting, and conflict and its resolution.

Programs during the second year continue these themes at a deeper level, with an added focus on elements related to social and personal responsibility, including ethics, action planning, collaboration, risk-taking, change, and service.

Juniors and seniors are challenged to think creatively about the relationship between leader and follower as they explore opportunities to coach, mentor, and network with each other as well as with individuals outside the college community. Emphasis is placed on translating the principles of inclusive leadership and social responsibility to the living and learning communities students will enter when they graduate.
