NASHUA, NH -- Rivier stormed out to a 41-12 halftime lead in securing its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory in an 86-35 win over the Gators in the league opener for both clubs Saturday afternoon at Muldoon Health and Fitness Center.
Mackenzie Brooks led four Raiders (9-3, 1-0 GNAC) starters in double figures with a game-high 18 points. She totaled 10 rebounds and three assists, and frontcourt mate Jess Melvin added a double-double of her own, with 11 points and a game-best 12 boards.
For Pine Manor (0-8, 0-1 GNAC), second-year guard Yiafia Dowridge (right) scored 11 points on 4-9 shooting. Gina Hobbs-Simpson came off the bench for 10 points, also hitting on 4-9 from the floor, and coralled a team-high six boards in 21 minutes. The junior guard converted on two of four three-point field goals, but her teammates shot a combined 1-10 from distance.
Freshman Tia Nelson added four points and five rebounds, as the Gators committed 26 turnovers and shot just 30 percent from the floor to drop their eighth straight.
Pine Manor kicks off a three-game homestand Tuesday night, taking on Simmons in GNAC action at 7 p.m. The Gators return to Pine Manor Gymnasium two days later, playing host to Wheelock in non-conference play.
