CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD) scored a team-high 16 points as Pine Manor defeated Mount Ida College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Thursday evening at Brunelli Court in Chestnut Hill, MA. With the win, the Gators’ first GNAC win of the season, Pine Manor moves to 7-8 (1-5 GNAC) on the season, while Mount Ida drops to 9-7 (3-2 GNAC).
Along with Wright, two other Pine Manor players scored in double-figures including classmate Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA), who recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior Jessica Gilmore (Dorchester, MA) also finished in double-figures with 13 points.
Mount Ida was led by a game-high 18 points from junior Evebonee Acosta (Hartford, CT) as well as an outstanding double-double, 13 points and 13 rebounds, performance from freshmen forward Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, MA).
Pine Manor got out to an early 6-2 lead just under four minutes into the game following a jumper by junior Ashley Reeves (Roxbury, MA). However, the teams exchanged baskets throughout a tight first-half, as the Gators' four-point advantage was the biggest lead for either team until a jumper by Mount Ida freshmen Allison O' Connor (Leominster,MA) gave the Mustangs a five-point advantage at 15-10. A jumper by Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME) then gave Mount Ida a 17-10 lead with 10:22 left in the first- the largest lead by either team in the first.
Trailing 17-10, the Gators then went on an 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from junior Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA). The teams then exchanged baskets for the remainder of the half until Wood knocked down a three-pointer, her third of the half, to give Mount Ida a six point advantage at 34-28. Gilmore then hit a shot for PMC just before the end of the half to cut the deficit to 34-30 at the break.
In the second half, the teams continued to battle back and forth. Mount Ida got out to a twelve-point advantage, 44-32, with 17:26 remaining in the second half following a shot by Acosta. However, from that point forward the Mustang lead began to shrink. Three-straight jumpers from Wright cut the deficit to six, at 44-38, with 15:40 remaining. A lay-up by Acosta pushed the Mount Ida lead back to eight before the Gators went on a run to take the lead for good.
Trailing 46-38, Pine Manor went on a 13-0 run to take 51-46 advantage with 10:02 to play. Pine Manor would extend its lead to seven points at multiple times throughout the remainder of the half as Mount Ida continued to press to cut the Gator lead. A jumper by Rafuse cut the lead to only three with 1:28, but the Mustang freshmen would foul out on the next possession and Pine Manor would once again push the lead to seven before the end of second, ultimately taking the 67-60 victory.
Both teams will return to action this Saturday as Mount Ida will travel to Providence, RI for a GNAC game versus Johnson & Wales University. While Pine Manor will play host to Albertus Magnus College. The Gators and Falcons have already faced each other once this season, with Albertus taking an 86-66 victory in the final of PMC's Boston Invitational Tournament on November 20.
