Chestnut Hill, MA -- Simmons collected 30 hits and scored 30 runs over two games to sweep Pine Manor in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Pine Manor Field in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Sharks hammered out 17 hits to defeat the Gators 13-1 in game one before scoring 17 runs in the first four innings of game two to earn the 17-4 victory.
In game one, it was the Gators who took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Jess Kennedy (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet) walked to lead off the game for Pine Manor. Kennedy would then move to second on a sacrafice bunt by junior Tara Doehler (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet) before finding her way to third on a single by junior Kayla Nielsen (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy). Freshman Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, RI/William E. Tolman Senior) would then hit a sacrafice fly to bring home Kennedy.
The Gators would hold the 1-0 advantage until the fourth inning when Simmons would pull ahead, 2-1, thanks to 2 RBI single by freshman Christina Mulcahy (Cambridge, MA/Mount Saint Joseph Academy). Mulcahy finished game one going 2-4 with 3 RBIs.
Simmons would continue to add-on in the late innings, scoring four in the fifth and one in the sixth before putting the game far out of reach with a six run seventh inning. Every starter in the Simmons batting order registered at least one hit, with Mulchay and classmate Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, MA/Barnstable) each driving in a game-high 3 RBIs.
In the second game, Simmons picked-up where it left off. The Sharks got out to a very early lead when GNAC Player of the Week Annie Thompson (Pacific Palisades, CA/Archer School for Girls) went deep over the left field fence to lead off the game. Following a double by senior Courtney Collier (Bolton MA/Nashoba Regional) and a sac fly by Mulcahy, the Sharks found themselves with a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Pine Manor fought back to earn a 4-3 advantage, taking the lead on a two-run home run by GNAC Rookie of the Week Ashley Carusone (Nashua,NH/Nashua North). Kennedy once again started the rally for Pine Manor by reaching base to lead off the inning and advanciong to second thanks to a bunt by Doehler. Nielsen then singled to drive home Kennedy before Kirylo would tack on another run with an RBI single of her own. With Kirylo on first, Carusone would then go deep for the third time this season to give PMC a 4-3 lead.
The Gator lead was short lived as Simmons would tally six run inning in both the second and third inning, putting the game well out of reach. The Sharks would eventually tack on two more runs in the fourth inning to secure a 17-4 victory in five innings. Thompson would finish the game 2-4 with four runs scored for Simmons, while Collier knocked in a game-high four RBIs.
With the sweep Simmons maintains sole position of first place in the GNAC, improving its overall record to 18-10 and its conference record to 14-2. Pine Manor drops to 8-13 and 8-6 in the GNAC and finds itself alone in fifth place in the conference standings. The Gators return to action tomorrow when they take on Rivier College at 1:00 p.m. in Nashua, NH.
