CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- Pine Manor dropped its 2011 season opener 2-0 to Southern Vermont College on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Hedley Field in Chestnut Hill, MA. Two first half goals from the Mountaineers helped Southern Vermont to secure the programs first victory since 2004.
Southern Vermont threatend in the early minutes of the game but Pine Manor sophomore goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) made a timely save and got help from a goalpost to weather an early storm in the Pine Manor box. Despite the early efforts of the Gator defense, the Mountaineers were able to strike first.
With just under 15 minutes in to the first half, Southern Vermont freshmen Connor Crawford (Tolland, CT) punched the back of the net following a pass from junior Shawnee Webster (Hoosick, NY) at the top of the box. Just over three minutes later, Crawfors would return the favor, setting up Webster in the box and giving the Mountaineers a 2-0 advantage only 18 minutes into the game.
The rest of the first remained scoreless despite Southern Vermont's advantage in possesion and numerous corner kick opportunities.
In the second, Pine Manor attempted to rally but opportuniities from outside the box by sophomore Tesla Castillo (Boston, MA) and senior Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA) failed to yield the the first PMC goal of 2011 as Southern Vermont secured the 2-0 victory.
Pine Manor returns to action on September 10 when it hosts Albertus Magnus in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener at 1:00 p.m. at Hedley Field in Chestnut Hill, MA.
