CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Sophomore Amanda Powell (Lumberton, NJ) and senior Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA) each scored two goals as Pine Manor secured its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), and first overall victory, of the 2011 season on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Hedley Field in Chestnut Hill, MA.
In the first half, a shot by Powell was mishandled by Anna Maria goalkeeper Samantha Ashton giving the Gators a 1-0 lead with 19 minutes remaining. Pine Manor held the lead until Anna Maria senior Alexa Hare (North Brookfield, MA) finally found a way to beat PMC goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) and tie the score, 1-1.
Kopystynsky made nine saves in the first half and eight in the second to finish with 17 on the day as she continued to add to her GNAC-leading total of 72.
In the second half, Powell would score again in the 70th minute from the top of the box on feed from senior Christina Santos (Pawtucket, RI). With a 2-1 lead, Deegan would score just two minutes after to push Pine Manor ahead, 3-1, with just under 18 minutes to play.
From that point, the Pine Manor defense went to work, shutting down Anna Maria for the remainder of the match. With just under two minutes to go, Deegan would again find the back of the net. Deegan’s second goal of the game would make the score a 4-1 final and give the Gators their first victory of the season.
Pine Manor will continue GNAC play on Wednesday, September 21, when they host Norwich at Hedley Field. The match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
