West Hartford, CT-- St. Joseph College collected nine runs and 14 hits over five innings to defeat Pine Manor 9-0 in game one before sneaking past the Gators 2-1 in extra innings for a game two victory and a sweep of Wednesday's doubleheader at St. Joseph College in West Hartford, CT.
St. Joseph's bats came to life in the second inning of game one as the Blue Jays pushed across seven runs to give themselves an 8 run advantage en route to a 9-0 victory. St. Joseph senior Susie Waters (Wrentham, MA) broke open the 1-0 game with a bases-clearing triple, driving home three runs to start the rally for the Blue Jays.
In the second game, St. Joseph sophomore Stephanie Valerio hit an RBI single off of PMC starter Michelle Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough) to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 advantage in the second inning. From that point on Campbell and St. Joseph pitcher Kristina Torres (Groton, CT) dueled until the sixth inning when Pine Manor senior Jess Kennedy (Lakeville, MA/Apponequet) hit a game-tying solo home-run.
With score tied the teams would play into extra innings. Pine Manor went quietly in the top of the eighth inning before the Blue Jays came to bat in the home-half of the inning. With runners on first and third St. Joseph sophomore Bryanna Durant (Middletown,CT) looped a single into rightfield to drive home the winning run and give the Blue Jays the sweep.
Folllowing today's action, the Gators drop to 3-2 in GNAC play, 3-10 overall, while St. Joseph runs its overall record to 9-11 and conference record to 5-3. Pine Manor will now look ahead to Saturday and a date with Suffolk, the first of four doubleheaders in five days for the Gators. First pitch for game one is set for 12 noon.
