Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 - to follow
Nashua, NH -- Pine Manor dropped both games of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to Rivier College on Saturday, April 16, 2011 in Nashua, NH. After dropping game one 8-2, the Gators and Raiders took part in a high scoring affair that saw Rivier escape with a 15-14 victory. The pair of losses drops Pine Manor to 8-8 in GNAC play, Rivier improves to 8-6 while moving past the Gators in the conference standings.
In game one, Rivier got out to an early lead and never looked back en route to the 8-2 victory. The Raiders got the scoring started when freshman Catherine Roy (Dracut, MA/Dracut) singled to drive home classmate Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI/Prout). Rivier would then tack on two more runs to end the first inning up 3-0. Roy lead the charge for the Raiders in game one, going 2-4 with a game-high 3 RBIs.
The Gators got a run back in the second, when junior Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Glades) grounded out to third base but allowed freshman Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) to reach home. The Gators wouldn't score again until the sixth inning when Flavia Vicente (Roxbury, MA/Jeremiah E. Burke) made her way around the bases following a lead-off bunt single to make the score 7-2.
In game two, Pine Manor's bats came back to life. The Gators posted four runs in both the first and the second innings, giving themselves an 8-3 advantage heading into the third. freshman Macayla Kirylo (Pawtucket, RI/William E. Tolman Senior) delivered the big blow in the top of the first inning when she hit a two-run home run to put the Gators out in front 4-0.
After Rivier got a run back in the bottom of the first, junior Kayla Nielsen (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) doubled to drive home two more PMC runs in the top of the second. Carusone would then double to drive home Nielsen before the Gators' freshman shortstop scored on a single by senior Michelle Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Seton Keough).
The Gators managed to increase their lead to 11-3 in the fourth inning when Campbell singled to drive home another run and Kirylo went deep again. Kirylo would finish the game 4-5 with six RBIs and two home runs. While the game seemed to be all but out reach, Rivier would continue to chip away. The Raiders added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to keep the Gators within reach and making the score 11-6.
The teams would both put up scoreless frames in the fifth before Pine Manor added three more runs in the sixth, thanks in part to a two RBI single by Nielsen. With the Gators holding a 14-6 advantage, Rivier needed to score to advance the game to the seventh inning. In need of only one run, the Raiders came up with five, cutting the deficit to 14-11.
With the Gators unable to add more insurance in the seventh, Rivier got one last chance. The Raiders took advantage, loading the bases for sophomore Amanda Thornton (Hanover, MA/Hanover). With one out, Thornton smacked a bases clearing triple to the tie the game, 14-14. With Thornton on third, junior Karen Waterman (Rutland, VT/Rutland) delivered a base knock to drive her home and complete the comeback.
