After averaging 10.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game during the final month of the season, Pine Manor junior Paulette Wright has been named Pine Manor’s Student-Athlete of the Month for February.
Wright was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder during the 2009-10 season, but an injury early this year sidelined the junior captain for the first-half of the 2010-11 campaign. Upon returning to the Pine Manor lineup, Wright made an immediate impact. The junior from Baltimore, Maryland gave the Gators a rebounding boost and another offensive option in the paint while earning the praise of her head coach for her play during the month of February.
“She was our best player over the last month of the season,” said Gator Head Coach Alex Gould of Wright. “She stepped back into the lineup and delivered for us just like she did all of last season.”
Following a road loss to Emmanuel College in which Wright totaled 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks and 5 steals, the junior forward posted a double-double in 66-48 Pine Manor win over Lasell College on February 8, 2011. The win was the third conference victory of the season for Pine Manor. In the game Wright scored 12 points while hauling in 11 boards. On the defensive end of the floor, Wright had 2 blocks and 2 steals as the Gators held the Lasers to under 30% shooting.
The next week, Wright managed only 6 points in a road loss at Mount Ida, but she grabbed 11 of the Gators 47 rebounds in the contest while also registering 2 steals. Wright would find her scoring touch in the next game as she, as well as classmate Phibe Pham (Boston, MA/Snowden), scored a team-high 14 points. Wright also grabbed 7 rebounds, and collected 2 steals, and 2 blocks as the Gators lost to St. Joseph’s College of Maine.
In the Gators final game of the season, Wright registered another double-double, scoring 13 points to go along with 12 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals. However, the Gators were unable to defeat St. Joseph College (CT), dropping a 75-52 decision to close out the 2010-11 regular season.
