CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Suffolk University started the game on a 10-0 run and never trailed, taking a 71-46 victory over Pine Manor College during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Brunelli Court in Chestnut Hill, MA.
Pine Manor finally broke a scoreless drought with 10:50 remaining in the first when senior Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD) knocked down a lay-up to make the score 10-2. However, the Suffolk lead continued to grow, to as many as 13 points, before Pine Manor was able to decrease the deficit.
Trailing 19-6, Pine Manor went on a 9-0 run, capped by a lay-up from senior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA) to cut the deficit to four, at 19-15. From their, Suffolk would regain momentum, pushing their lead back to 12 points with 45 seconds remaining in the half before taking a 31-22 advantage into the break.
The Gators were led by a game-high 15 points from senior Jessica Gilmore (Dorchester, MA), while Dumeran finished with 10 points and Wright finished with nine points for the Gators.
In the second-half, Suffolk picked up where it left off. While the teams exchanged buckets in the early going, the Rams eventually grew their lead to 18, leading 49-31, following a jumper by Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, CT). Ruys had 11 points, finishing in double-figures for Suffolk, along with Meghan Black (Roslindale, MA), 11 points, and Lindsay Rogers (Gloucester, MA) -- who had a team-high 14 points to go with 14 rebounds. As a team, Suffolk out-rebounded the Gators by a commanding 53-29 advantage.
From there, Pine Manor would knock the deficit down to 15, trailing 49-34 with 6:50 remaining-- but the Gators would get no closer. Suffolk continued to pull away during the closing minutes of the second, leading by as many as 28 points, en route to the 71-46 victory.
Pine Manor will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Standish, ME to take on the Monks of Saint Joseph's College. Suffolk will also play Tuesday night, taking a short trip to battle Boston and GNAC rival Emerson College.
