Teakia Brown '07

Employment:
Peace Corps in Zambia

Education:
Pine Manor College, Major in Social and Political Systems

“The professors and advisors at Pine Manor really helped to shape me. They showed me that there are many possibilities for me to do the work on social issues about which I am passionate. They gave me the space to think as freely as I possibly could and to not put limitations on myself."

"They believed in me, even when I came in with some crazy idea for a research project or other thing. They supported me in exploring ideas and just thinking about where I could take my life.”

Life after Graduation

Teakia majored in Social and Political Systems with a strong interest in social justice and health issues. She did her senior internship at Planned Parenthood of Massachusetts, which offered her a job after graduation. From Planned Parenthood, Teakia held several positions in which she continued to apply and strengthen her skills and pursue her commitments. She worked at Massachusetts Medical Center in a women's clinic, contributing to a research project on alcohol and substance abuse. She subsequently worked at the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center and the Boston Public Health Commission. In May 2015 Teakia left the US for service in the Peace Corps in Zambia, where she will be working on maternal and child health issues.

How PMC Helped Me

Reflecting on her experience at PMC Teakia had this to say:

"The professors and advisors at Pine Manor really helped to shape me. They showed me that there are many possibilities for me to do the work on social issues about which I am passionate. They gave me the space to think as freely as I possibly could and to not put limitations on myself.

"They believed in me, even when I came in with some crazy idea for a research project or other thing. They supported me in exploring ideas and just thinking about where I could take my life.

"Pine Manor gave me the gift of possibilities."
