Chestnut Hill, MA -- Pine Manor junior Beth Deegan (Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower Catholic School for Girls) scored five goals and sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Tenzca (South Meriden, CT/Platt) made 20 saves to help lead Pine Manor to a 12-11 victory over visiting Daniel Webster College on Monday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, MA. The win is the first of the 2011 season for Pine Manor, as well as the first collegiate coaching victory for head coach Erica Adams.
The teams, meeting for the second time in four days, exchanged goals throughout a wild contest. Daniel Webster took an early lead in the contest, with Stephanie Zeman (Jefferson Township, NJ/Jefferson Township) putting the Eagles up 3-0 4:59 into the first with her first of three goals in the game.
Deegan would then score twop goals of her own to pull the Gators within one, before Daniel Webster sophomore Samantha Cotoni (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) and Zemen each netted a goal but the visitor back up by three. Deegan once again would respond for Pine Manor, scoring the third of her five first-half goals with 13:42 remaining.
Cotoni then put another shot in the back of the net on a free position attempt just 41 seconds later to help Daniel Webster maintain the three goal cushion. However, the Eagles had no answer for Deegan as she scored twice more to bring Pine Manor within one at 6-5.
With Pine Manor trailing 7-5 with 6:31 remaining in the first, the Gators would score three unanswered goals to take an 8-7 lead into the half. PMC junior Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, Fl/Coral Glades) scored with 3:33 to go in the first before sophomore captain Margaret Roberts (Allentown, PA/Louis E. Dieruff) netted her first of the game. Gross would then add another to make the score 8-7 in favor of the Gators.
Daniel Webster quickly tied the score coming out of the break when junior Alexa Quintiliani (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet) scored 31 seconds into the half. However, the Gators would then strike three times to pull ahead 11-8, thanks to goals by Deegan, Gross, and freshman Tamara Sakala (Zambia, Africa/Kasisi Girls Secondary School).
However, just after scoring the go-ahead goal 59 seconds into the second half, Deegan received her second yellow card of the game and Pine Manor’s leading scorer was forced to watch the remainder of the game from the sideline. Daniel Webster would then score twice more, cutting the deficit to two before PMC sophomore Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB, Canada/Rivier East Collegiate) netted the eventual game-winning goal on an assist from Roberts with 12:21 remaining.
The win brings Pine Manor’s overall record to 1-5, while the Eagles of Daniel Webster drop top 1-10 on the season.
