CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – University of Saint Joseph sophomore Ciara Perez (Manchester, CT) put down a match-high 11 kills to lead the visiting Blue Jays to a 3-0 victory, by set score of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-10, over Pine Manor on Tuesday evening at Brunelli Court.
The visiting Blue Jays flew out to an early lead in the first set, shutting down Pine Manor defensively while hitting at a .412 clip to grab a 25-13 first set victory. Perez and freshman Samantha Edwon (Beacon Falls, CT) each opened the match with three kills in the first set.
Saint Joseph took a 2-0 lead following the second set as sophomore Megan Williams (Lakeville, CT) paced the offense en route to finishing with a match-high 20 set assists. However, Perez continued to be the story in the second set, as the sophomore put down seven kills on 12 attempts, including seven of her first eight, without committing an error.
The Blue Jays put the Gators away in the final set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and never looking back. Freshman Emily Vigue (Lebanon, CT) led the way with four of her five kills in the final frame to help Saint Joseph to the 3-0 victory.
The Blue Jays finished with a 19-3 advantage in services aces as Saint Joseph picked up its seventh win of the season to move to 7-20 overall (1-9 GNAC).
For Pine Manor, Michelle Cole (Quincy, MA) finished with a team-high two kills while sophomore Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL) added a team-high five digs as the Gators dropped to 3-12 on the season.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday night. Saint Joseph will travel to take on Mitchell College in New London, CT. Pine Manor will also be on the road, as the Gators will take on Regis. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
