Juan Jose Barboza Gubo
With coaching experience at the Division I level and success as a national team player, Juan Barboza joined the Gators staff in September 2009 as head volleyball coach.
From 2007-08, Barboza served as associate head coach of the Harvard University men's volleyball team, overseeing several aspects of the men's team at America's premier university. In 2006-07, he was an assistant coach for the Crimson's men's team.
After representing his native Peru as a setter and hitter on the international level, Barboza served as an assistant coach for the Peruvian women's national team in 2000. Under head coach Man Bok Park, Barboza guided the team to the qualifying round of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
Prior to coaching the Peruvian women's team, he gained coaching experience as an assistant at his alma mater, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, leading the men's team to a national championship, a feat he also duplicated as a player.
In 2000 and 2001, Barboza was named Best Athlete at the Lima institution. Meanwhile, he represented the Peruvian National Team as a team captain until 2001. An internationally renowned artist, Barboza's volleyball exploits have led him around the world, participating as an amateur and professional player throughout Argentina, Brazil, China, Columbia, the United States and Venezuela.
After earning a bachelor's degree in sculpture from PCU, Barboza earned a master's of fine arts in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2007 and a master's of fine arts in sculpture from Mass Art in 2008.
In addition to leading the Gators volleyball program, he is currently an adjunct professor of visual arts at Mass Art.
