CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Lasell picked up a pair of 3-0 wins over Pine Manor and Albertus Magnus in the Gators GNAC Tri-Match, and Albertus overcame a 2-0 deficit to top Pine Manor 3-2 Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill.
The Lasers got off to a blazing start to Game 1, opening up a 5-0 lead on Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) serves. With the Gators trailing 10-5, Lasell ran off an 8-0 run, scoring seven straight points on serves from libero Amanda Major (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug), opening up an 18-6 lead, never to look back. In spite of three kills from middle hitter Alie Johnston (Winnepeg, MB/River East) an early 8-0 Lasers run featuring seven points on serves from sophomore Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME/Biddeford) determined the Gators fate in a 25-14 Game 2 loss. The final frame was more of the same, with a 5-0 run that put Lasell ahead 16-6 as the difference.
Jen Gross (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Glades) led the Gatos with 10 digs, four kills and a serve ace. Johnston added six kills as the Gators fell to 1-3, (0-2 GNAC).
In the second match, the Lasers blazed past Albertus Magnus, 3-0 (25-18, 25-5, 25-9). Lasell scored 17 straight points on Melanie Costa (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow) serves in Game 2 and opened Game 3 on a 7-0 run with Jenna-Lynn Geary (Marion, MA/Old Rochester) at serve.
In third match it looked like Pine Manor was going to return the favor to Albertus, as the Gators captured the first two games 25-23 and 25-20. Johnston totaled nine kills through two games, with Gross adding eight kills in what looked like a Pine Manor’s first GNAC victory.
The Falcons, though, had other plans. A Johnston service ace gave the Gators a 9-8 lead in Game 3, but an 8-1 Albertus run gave the Falcons an 18-11 lead, preventing a Pine Manor sweep. In Game 4, another Johnston ace tied the set 5-5, and her third of three aces on the match cut the late AMC lead to 22-19, leading to a Falcons time out. That was as close as the Gators would get, as Albertus scored the final three points to close out a 25-22 win. The deciding match was a back and forth, nip-and-tuck battle, with neither team taking a two-point lead until the Gators forced Albertus coach Steve Wydra to call a time out trailing 8-6. The Falcons responded, taking a 9-7 advantage, leading to a Pine Manor time out. Johnston, who hammered a team-high 19 kills, temporarily took over, as consecutive kills from the freshman tied the game 13-13 with Gross, the Gators top server, at the helm.
Falcons frosh Maritza Rosemond (New Haven, CT/Career) got the last word, as her solo block put Albertus in front 14-13, and Rosemond’s service ace on the ensuing serve sent the Falcons to a 15-13 Game 5 victory.
In her first match of the season Pine Manor senior, Veronica Vozzolo (Bellmore, NY/JFK) led the Gators with 16 digs. Gross totaled 11 kills to go with three solo blocks, and Johnston added three blocks in the loss.
The Falcons improve to 1-4 on the season (1-1 GNAC), while the Gators fall to 1-4 (0-3 GNAC). Pine Manor is in action again on Tuesday at Regis at 7 p.m.
