Worcester, MA – On Saturday October 2, Pine Manor traveled to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for a non-conference tri-match, taking on Massachusetts Maritime and host WPI.
The Gators and the Buccaneers meet for the second time this season and once again it was Pine Manor that would come away with the victory, defeating Mass Maritime 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14). Freshman Megan Patch (Bethpage, TN/Red Boiling Springs) lead the way for the Gators with 10 service aces while also contributing 16 digs and a solo block. Patch also totaled 16 set assists, setting up sophomore Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB/River East Collegiate), 13 kills, as well as junior Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Glades), 6 kills, and freshman Ashley Carusone (Nashua, NH/Nashua North), 5 kills and a team high 15 digs, as the Gators balanced offense put away Mass. Maritime. In her first collegiate start, freshman Gloria Lara (South Boston, MA/East Boston) made strong contributions to the Gators defense as she totaled 8 digs, while junior Aponi Washington (Brockton, MA/Brockton) contributed 2 solo blocks on route to the Pine Manor victory.
Seniors Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, MA/Archbishop Williams), 6 kills, and Allison Condino (Fitchburg, MA/Westlake), 16 set assists, led the way for Mass. Maritime, who dropped to 1-15 following the loss.
Following the victory over Mass. Maritime the Gators looked to pick up a second victory against host WPI. However, it was the Engineers that would end the day with two victories, defeating the Gators 3-0 (12-25, 11-25, 15-25) and running their overall record to 15-2, as they also defeated Mass Maritime in their first match of the day.
WPI took control of the match from outset capturing the first two sets 25-12 and 25-11. Sophomore Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA/Elsie Allen) had a team high 9 kills while junior Kim Woodward (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) totaled 18 set assists and sophomore Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY/Seaford) added 2 solo blocks.
The Gators battled back in the third set but once again came up short, as the Engineers would secure the third and final set 25-15. Pine Manor was paced by the efforts of Gross, who had a match high 13 kills as well as 14 digs. Following her efforts against Mass. Maritime, Megan Patch once again made significant contributions as she added 17 set assists and a match-high 22 digs for the Gators, who also received 17 digs from Carusone.
Pine Manor will host Becker College on Thursday night at 7:00pm before turning its attention back to Great Northeast Athletic Conference play this weekend.
