CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Pine Manor swept both games of a season opening tri-match on Saturday, September 10, 2011 in Chestnut Hill, MA. In their first match the Gators topped Mitchell College in straight sets, defeating the Mariners 25-15, 25-21, and 25-23. In the third match of the day Pine Manor also topped The College of New Rochelle in three straight sets, winning 25-13, 25-17, 25-17.
With the two wins the Gators are 2-0 early in the 2011 season and are on a six match win streak dating back to the end of the 2010 season.
In the first match, junior Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) led the Gators with 10 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Megan Patch (Bethpage, TN) finished the match with 25 set assists to go along with 6 service aces.
The Gators won the first set 25-15 before falling behind in the second set 20-15 before freshmen Kayla Ulery (Goose Creek, SC) would go on serving run to pull the Gators back into the lead and to a 25-21 set victory. Ulery finished the match with 3 services aces, all of them coming in the second set.
In the final set of their first match, the Gators put Mitchell away thanks to the hitting of Ulery and senior Jennifer Gross (Coral Springs, FL), each of whom finished the set with 3 kills. Both Ulery and Gross finished the match with 6 kills.
In Pine Manor’s second match, the Gators came out swinging as Johnston and Gross helped to power Pine Manor passed New Rochelle in straight sets. Gross had a team high 8 kills while Johnston finished with 7 and freshmen Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL) had 6 kills in the victory.
Following a 25-15 first set win, Gross laid down 5 kills in the second set to help Pine Manor take a 25-17 victory and 2-0 advantage in the match. From there the Gators would finish the match with a 25-17 victory in the third set.
Pine Manor returns to action next weekend when it will welcome Wentworth and Lesley University for a non-conference tri-match beginning at 11 am.
