Location
Chestnut Hill is an affluent Boston suburb, famed as the home of the Longwood Cricket Club- site of international tennis competitions. A major highway, Route 9, connects Chestnut Hill with downtown Boston, only five miles away; Logan Airport can be reached in 30 minutes. Route 9 also connects directly with Route 128, and is 10 minutes from the Massachusetts Turnpike. Even with this central, convenient location, once you enter the gates of Pine Manor, big city congestion seems worlds away from the secluded, country atmosphere.

Roughwood
The original estate dwelling built in 1891, and now the Ferry Administration Building, was called Roughwood. "Candle snuffer" turrets, the use of local materials, like red sandstone and "pudding stone," and leaded glass windows create an imposing Richardsonian structure. The circular drive is paved with cobblestones, originally ballast for Boston's sailing ships.
The Foyer of Roughwood is a spacious place to register or welcome guest, with a massive rusticate granite and polished red marble fireplace and dark oak paneling, high ceilings, and carved gilt detail. Paired french doors lead to a terrace. Off the foyer is the elegant Moncrief Room. Its craved fruited and matchbook paneling of Circassian walnut and period-style furnishings make it ideal for small receptions and parties.
In the English Georgian Founder's Room, a carved double staircase (perfect for photos or grand entrances) descends to a generously proportioned, fireplaced room. Oak-paneled walls with rare tapestries hang below a beamed and gilt ceiling. Jutting, stone casement windows and teak floor add to the grandeur. Doors open to a gorgeous lawn, enhanced in June by spectacular rhododendron hedge.
