CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Wheelock College sophomore Jessica Hersom (Sanford, ME) scored at 75:26 of the second half to give Wheelock a 2-1 victory over Pine Manor on Tuesday afternoon at a rainy Hedley Field in Chestnut Hill, MA.
Wheelock opened the scoring in the 26th minute when sophomore Emma Petner (Hilo, HI) capitalized on a loose ball in the box. Petner gained possession on the goal line following a scrum involving several players and Pine Manor goalkeeper Natahsa Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) before emphatically finishing the play with her third goal of the season.
Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) made a season-high 15 saves in the loss, nine coming in the second half.
The Wildcats carried the 1-0 advantage into the second half, leading until the 52:10 mark when Pine Manor freshman Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, NJ), slotted home a breakaway opportunity to tie the game at 1-1.
Lynch’s fourth goal of the season set the stage for Herosm, as the sophomore capitalized on a late chance off of a cross to score the game-winner with 14:34 left to play.
Petner played the ball into the penalty area to Madeline Domingo (Newington, CT) who calmly laid the ball off for the shot by Hersom. Hersom then delivered a drive that was deflected by Pine Manor goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL) but still managed to find its way into the back of the net.
The win is the first of the season for Wheelock (1-4-0 overall, 0-0 NECC) while Pine Manor drops to 1-5-0 on the season with the setback. Wheelock will be back in action on Thursday when they host Eastern Nazarene. Pine Manor now has a week off before the Gators take on local rival Newbury College at Hedley Field at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25.
