Message from the Director

Dear Writer,

The Solstice Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program is like no other in the country. While we insist that both students and faculty give their utmost to their creative and academic work, we also believe that a writer’s art does not thrive in a harsh, severely competitive atmosphere. Every student in our program is challenged to reach her or his fullest potential as a writer and asked to encourage fellow students to do the same, fostering mutual respect and discouraging cliques and hierarchies. Our faculty and student body represent diverse backgrounds and artistic approaches, providing an avenue for expanding our ideas about what “a writer” is and where our art can take us. Our workshops and semesters of one-on-one study feature constructive criticism that provides students with ideas and direction, not imperatives or discouragement. Some faculty members might prove more demanding or “tough” than others, but all are fair and focused on helping students raise their work to the highest level.

The Solstice MFA Program emphasizes community, fostered in part by the setting of our 10-day residencies. Pine Manor College is situated on 55 wooded acres on which former estate buildings blend architecturally with state-of-the-art facilities. It is the ideal setting for our workshops, classes, readings, and social gatherings.

As Director of the Solstice MFA Program, I do my utmost to ensure that every student and faculty member feels well-informed, encouraged, and included. Together, we are making the Solstice Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing Program of Pine Manor College one of the most respected in the country.

If you would like to talk with me or with Associate Director Quintin Collins—or if you’d like to chat with current students or alumni—I invite you to call the Solstice MFA Office at (617) 731-7684 or -7697, or email us at

All my best to you and your work,

 Meg Kearney
