NEWTON, Mass. -- Lasell College freshmen Alexis Chappell (Springfield, MA) scored a game-high 19 points and four Lasell players finished in double-figures as the Lasers defeated Pine Manor, 71-52, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Saturday January 14 at the Lasell Athletic Center in Newton, MA.
Chappell, who also grabbed eight rebounds and registered six assists, was joined in double figures by junior Kim Archibald (Lewiston, ME), 15 points, and fellow freshmen Justine Ryan (Norwood, MA), 12 points, and Danielle Autencio (Montville, CT), 11 points. Autencio also collected a team-high 9 rebounds for Lasell, who grabbed thier first victory of the season to improve to 1-13 (1-3 GNAC).
Pine Manor senior Paulette Wright (Baltimore, MD) scored a team-high 12 points and collected six rebounds for the Gators. Junior Tia Nelson (Rockport, MA) finished with nine points, all in the first half, while senior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA) also had nine points and nine rebounds.
The Gators traded baskets with Lasell for much of the first half. With PMC leading 17-13 early in the first, Lasell went on an 11-0 run, capped off by a three pointer by Chappell at the 9:54 mark, to take a 24-17 advantage. Trailing past the midway point of the first, Nelson knocked down the last of her three first-half three-pointers to cut the Lasell lead to 30-28 with 3:27 to go before the half. Lasell shot 45.2% from the field in the first half, compared to just 29.4% for the Gators, allowing the Lasers to head into the break leading, 35-30.
The second half started with Lasell going on an 11-2 run, capped by a Chappell layup at the 14:47 mark that gave the Lasers a 46-32 advantage. The two teams then traded baskets for much of the rest of the second half with the Gaotrs unable to retake the lead. Pine Manor sophomore Tesla Castillo (Boston, MA) hit a jump shot at the 4:27 mark to cut the lead to seven, at 58-51, but that was as close as Pine Manor would get, as Lasell closed out the game on a 13-1 run to take the 71-52 final.
With the loss, Pine Manor drops to 5-6 (0-3 GNAC). The Gators will return to action on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 16, when they take on Emerson College in a GNAC game at Brown-Plofker Gymnasium in Boston, MA. Tip-off is at 12 noon.
