CHESTNUT HILL, MA – For the second straight weekend, Pine Manor won two games as part of a home tri-match and improved its overall record to 4-0 on Saturday, September 17, 2011 in Chestnut Hill, MA.
Trailing two sets to none in the final match of the day, Pine Manor rallied to secure a 25-22 third set victory over Wentworth before taking the final two sets in a comeback 3-2 (19-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11) victory. The victory came after the Gators put on a dominant display in their early match against Lesley, defeating the Lynx 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-16).
Against Lesley, Pine Manor senior Jen Gross (Coral Springs, FL) laid down 11 kills to lead the Gators, while freshmen Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL) finished with 8 kills of her own as the two Floridians paced the Gators to victory. Sophomore setter Megan Patch (Bethpage, TN) finished the opening match with 22 set assists. Patch would total 61 assist on the day after dishing out 39 in the second match.
Pine Manor got out to a slow start in its second match, dropping the first two sets to Wentworth. In the third set, the Gators would regain their form, as Mann and junior Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) each put down four kills and Gross put down three to help rally the Gators to a set victory. Gross finished the second match with 9 kills, helping her to move just 12 kills shy of 500 in her career.
In the fourth set, the Gators raced out to a 7-0 advantage, only to see Wentworth climb back in to the set 7-6. From that point the teams would exchange points but Johnston, Mann, Gross and sophomore Ashley Carusone (Nashua,NH) would each put down two kills to help lead Pine Manor to a fourth set victory. Johnston would continue to impress in the final set, scoring five of the Gators’ final 15 points thanks to service aces. In the final two sets Johnston totaled eight services aces and had four kills to finish the second match with 14 kills in all.
Pine Manor will continue non-conference play on Tuesday, September 20 when the travel to face Becker College. The match is at 7:00 p.m.
Note: Wentworth defeated Lesley 3-0 in the second match of the day.
