Gators send Hedley Field off in style, top Eagles 1-0

Box Score
CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Alicia Grenier’s ninth goal of the season separated Pine Manor from Daniel Webster in the Gators 1-0 win Saturday afternoon, earning goalkeeper Margaret Roberts her first career shutout.

A sloppy, back-and-forth first half on a rain-soaked Hedley Field left both teams scoreless after 45 minutes. While Pine Manor outshot the Eagles 8-7 in the opening stanza, Daniel Webster held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks and tested Roberts (Allentown, PA/Louis E. Dieruff) with three shots on goal to zero for the Green and White.

Gators freshman Amanda Smalley set out to settle her club’s shots on goal discrepancy in short order, but it was her passing that would ultimately decide the contest. Smalley (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) put three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the second, with Amy Waller (Berlin, MA/Tahanto) stopping all three.

Then, 11:24 into the frame, the midfielder connected with Grenier on a give-and-go at the 18 yard line for the forward’s team-leading ninth goal of the season. Grenier (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case) beat Waller to the keeper’s right from straight on in what would ultimately be the difference-maker.

The Gators outshot Daniel Webster 17-13 in all and worked an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams put seven shots on goal.

Pine Manor’s last home match before Hedley Field’s installation of a new natural grass surface was one of milestones. In surpassing last season’s total of three wins, Grenier’s goal gave the sophomore 20 points for the second straight season. In addition to Roberts’ first career shutout, Smalley’s assist was the freshman’s first.

With her team’s second win in its last three home games, Grenier’s Gators improve to 4-11-1 on the season. Tom McGuinness’ Eagles, meanwhile, drop a third straight 1-0 decision in falling to 4-9-0.

The Gators wrap up 2009 with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Suffolk on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
