CHESTNUT HILL, MA (September 30, 2013) — On September 25, 2013, Pine Manor College was awarded a planning grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Thisgrant will support planning activities of the biology program as it prepares tosubmit a larger grant application in spring of 2014.A comprehensive application will be submitted to the National Institutes ofHealth (NIH) and will be aligned with its BUILD program (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity), whichseeks to enhance the NIH/STEM workforce.

By preparing a BUILD application, Pine Manor College seeks to enhance its ability to prepare undergraduate science majors for careers in biomedical research. Collaborating with our partners, we will lay the groundwork for a program that leverages existing strengths, develops new partnerships and creates a clear pathway to research careers. Pine Manor College has championed educational programs for students from diverse backgrounds since the mid-1990s and has placed a high value on training in biology.

This planning grant is the fruit of a strategic effort by Pine Manor College to deepen its commitment to science education and to strengthen its pathways for professional opportunities. The planning grant also reflects a strong working relationship with the scientists and educators at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Science of Tufts University and with Science Club for Girls, a nonprofit organization in Boston whose mission is to “increase the self-confidence and literacy in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) of K-12th grade girls”. SCFG engages over a thousand girls a year in eastern Massachusetts.
