Placing Kindness on a Pedestal

Dear Gator Family,

Welcome! We kick off the 2019-2020 academic year with a continued commitment to building community and enhancing student success through a commitment to racial and social equity, restorative practice, and taking a trauma-informed approach to our work. In this effort, many of Pine Manor College’s staff and faculty, along with all the Pine Manor College Student Ambassadors (PMSAs) participated in an intensive two-day restorative practices training this summer. The training gave a context to restorative work as it discussed how it is rooted in indigenous practices meant to engage tribal communities and cultures throughout the world. We then learned the theory connected to restorative practice and learned how to facilitate proactive and responsive circles. Circles are at the heart of restorative work as they bring communities together to build, maintain, and restore. As we launch this new academic year, I encourage you to learn more about restorative practices and engage in circles as we strive to become a restorative college.

Pine Manor College is a special place. We have diversity of thoughts, ethnicities and races, genders and gender expressions, religions, sexual orientations, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities. We have bilingual and multilingual speakers and represent countries around the globe. The students on our campus exude resiliency, persistence, and the ability to navigate and overcome obstacles. This diversity enriches our learning and our thinking. It makes us stronger and richer. The foundation of restorative practices is built on diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging. As leaders on campus, in your families, and in your communities, please join me in placing kindness on a pedestal as we enter the academic year.

With a focus on kindness, empathy, listening, and understanding, our community will thrive and become a family, your Gator family. So, let us please applaud each other for wins and successes, encourage each other to do good and do right. We are a family and we are better together.

The 2019-2020 Student Handbook can be found here.  Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the PMC Student Handbook as it includes lots of helpful information for navigating Pine Manor College and outlines the College’s policies and protocol.  All PMC students are responsible for understanding and abiding by the Student Handbook and community standards set forth.

As we embark on a new year, let’s model kindness, empathy, listening, and understanding; let’s lead in ways that make our families and communities proud; and let’s hold each other to high standards and celebrate all contributions to our learning outcomes of communication, critical thinking, collaboration, citizenship, and integrated and applied learning. Join me in making Pine Manor College our home.

With this as our goal, we will have nothing short of a wonderful year!
