Dr. William Stargard, Professor of Art History and Assistant Dean of Faculty Development and Teaching Excellence, delivered a paper, “Sports as an Agent of Social Change,” at the New England Faculty Development Consortium (NEFDC)/Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) conference at Fairfield University on Friday, 29 May. His paper was based on a course that he taught this past spring, FYE 102 Leadership in Action: Using Sports to Achieve Social Change. The course enabled first-year students to examine how sports can help create positive change for both individuals and society as a whole. For their service learning project, students designed and implemented a series of sports activities and reflective exercises (incorporating motivational sports slides with words and/or images) for 10- to 12-year olds in an after-school program at the Blue Hill Boys and Girls Club in Dorchester, MA.

Kelly Pielech, Director of Operations of the Blue Hill Boys wrote: “Your students seemed excited to be at the Club, and genuinely interested in getting to know the kids. You could tell the lessons that they were teaching the members were meaningful to them as well.”
The service learning project benefitted both the Boys and Girls Club students through their experience and appreciation of sports as well as the PMC students in their roles as facilitators of social change. As Pine Manor’s students reflected on their experience as mentors, one student wrote, “It helped open my eyes to see how fun giving back to my community could be, and how rewarding it is for me and the children…”

Pine Manor is a private four-year liberal arts college situated on 50-plus wooded acres in the Chestnut Hill section of Brookline, Massachusetts, only a few miles outside of Boston. For over 100 years Pine Manor has provided a highly student-focused education and tailored mentoring grounded in the liberal arts tradition.
