CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor College women’s basketball freshman Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan), above left, scored a team-high 21 points while classmate Ari DeJesus (Providence, R.I.), above right, recorded her third straight double-double, scoring 17 points and collecting 12 rebounds, as the Gators cruised to a 101-70 victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday night at Brunelli Court. With the win, the Gators improve to 3-0. Mitchell falls to 0-2 with the setback.
Pine Manor never trailed throughout the contest, opening the game with a 13-0 run, capped with a layup by freshman Jayva Johnson (West Haven, Conn.) just 2:51 into the game. Johnson finished as one of six Pine Manor players in double-figures with 13 points. She was joined by Vaughan and DeJesus as well as sophomore Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.), who finished with 16 points, and junior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Khiyana Isaac (Boston, Mass.) who finished with 14 and 10 points respectively.
PMC would lead by as many as 29 points in the first half, eventually heading into the locker room with 50-25 halftime lead.
For Mitchell, sophomore Amanda Garcia (New Britain, Conn.) recorded a double-double, scoring a game-high 26 points while also collecting a game-high 17 rebounds. Classmate Savannah Boyle (Attleboro, Mass.) also finished with 20 points for the Mariners, shooting four of ten from beyond the three point line, including three for three in the second half. However, Boyle’s second half effort wasn’t enough as the Gators continued to build on their lead after the break..
DeJesus scored 14 of her 17 points following the half to help the Gators grow their lead to as many as 44 points with 7:14 remaining. Boyle’s last three-pointer of the contest would cap a 7-0 Mitchell run with 1:49 remaining but from there the Gators would close out the Mariners for the 101-70 victory.
Mitchell will be back in action on Thursday night when they host Saint Joseph CT at 6:00 PM. Pine Manor will also be in action on Thursday when they play host to local rival Wheelock College. Tip-off for Thursday’s game at Brunelli Court is at 7:00 PM.
