WEST HARTFORD, CT -- After topping Saint Joseph College (CT) 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-8) , Pine Manor defeated Mount Ida College 3-2 (25-19, 25-14, 22-25, 20-25, 15-6) in a hard fought five set match on Saturday, September 24 in West Hartford, CT. With the victories, the Gators improve to 7-0 this season and are now 2-0 in GNAC play.
In the first match, PMC sophomore Alie Johnston (Winnipeg, MB, Canada) led all players with 11 kills, while freshmen Destiny Mann (Orlando, FL) put down nine kills to help pace the Gators to the straight sets victory. Johnston also led all players with four service aces in the first match, while sophomore Megan Patch (Bethpage, TN) had 18 set assists to go along with two aces of her own. Patch finished the day with a total of 47 kills after dishing out 29 in the second match.
Following the victory over Saint Joseph (CT) the Gators raced out to an early advantage over Mount Ida. After topping the Mustangs 25-19 in the first set, the Gators delivered a dominant 25-14 victory in set two- hitting a combined .409 as a team in the second set.
Pine Manor's two Floridians, senior Jen Gross (Coral Springs, FL) and Mann, tied for the team high with 13 kills in the second match, while Mann also collected 11 digs. Freshmen Amy Keokanlaya (Walls, Ms) led the team in digs with 17 versus Mount Ida. Johnston collected 11 more kills in the second match to finish tied with Mann with a team high 22 kills total on the day.
For Gross, the match versus Mount Ida saw her pass 500 kills in her Pine Manor career, she now sits at 511 on her career.
Not content to go quietly, Mount Ida battled back to take the third and fourth set. Fighting back to tie the match thanks in large part to junior Jen Ferreira (Shirley, MA), 12 kills, and senior Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN), 9 kills.
However, the Gators raced out to an early lead in the fifth set and never looked back, finding the form that they showed in the second set and finishing off the Mustangs with a 15-6 victory.
Pine Manor has a quick turnaround, as the Gators will now host Elms College on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
